April is the “Month of the Military Child”, a time to recognise and celebrate the resilience, adaptability and strength shown by children growing up in Service families.
Military children experience a unique childhood. Frequent moves, changing schools, time away from parents and the uncertainty that can come with Service life all require a high level of resilience. Despite these challenges, military children consistently show courage, flexibility and a remarkable ability to adapt. These are qualities that should be recognised and celebrated by the whole Defence community.
At DIO, we understand how important it is for children to feel safe, settled and supported wherever Service life takes them. Currently we support around 118,000 people living in SFA in the UK and overseas, and approximately 42,000 of those are children and young people under 18.
Providing safe, secure and well‑maintained homes is a key part of supporting Service families and their children. We recognise the standards that Service personnel and their families deserve, and improving accommodation remains a top priority for DIO. A stable, well‑maintained home environment helps children settle more quickly, feel secure and put down roots.
As part of our Families First approach, we are working closely with our accommodation suppliers to drive lasting improvements to accommodation services. This work is focused on raising standards, improving reliability and ensuring families feel listened to and supported. Many of these changes are already underway. Our new hard flooring means it’s much easier for parents to tidy up after any little accidents, giving peace of mind for busy families. Plus, with the new Defence Homes colour palette, children can express their personalities in their bedrooms, and parents won’t have to worry about repainting walls back to magnolia when it’s time to move out.
During this “Month of the Military Child”, we recognise military children as a vital part of the Defence community. We are proud to support them and their families, and we will continue working hard to ensure that military children can grow up in a stable, safe and happy environment wherever their life takes them.
