1,000 homes upgraded for military families this Christmas

Military families across the UK will celebrate Christmas in their newly improved homes with more upgrades promised in the new year. Urgent works on The 1000 homes, most in need of refurbishment, have finished ahead of schedule, with a further 250 to be completed by April, 2026. This means that 12 months on from the Consumer Charter launch, we will have increased our initial target by 25%.

The first phase of work has taken place at homes across the UK, with upgrades made to almost 700 properties in England, over 150 properties in Northern Ireland, over 100 in Wales and over 50 in Scotland.

Works in England include improvements to more than 200 military homes in Wiltshire and Windsor, as well as homes in Bassingbourn, Swanton Morely, Woodbridge and Uxbridge.

Unreliable boilers and heating systems have been upgraded, hundreds of leaky roofs have been repaired, and new bathrooms, kitchens, windows and doors have been installed, all in time for families to enjoy their festivities.

We visited Cpl Jack Crean, his partner Nina and their one-year-old son Charlie, who have recently moved into a newly refurbished home at Bassingbourn Barracks.

“We are really pleased to be in our new home for Christmas. Everyone is a lot happier here, especially Charlie. It’s nice to live in an up-to-date house, it works so much better for the whole family and if I was to go away, I know that my family is in a clean, modern house.”

Senior Housing Officer in the Central Wyton area, Tina said:

This is such a special moment for me to see. I’ve lived at Bassingbourn for 16 years, with 10 of those years spent in the olderstyle properties now being worked on. It is amazing to know that families posted to Bassingbourn will now enjoy the livedin experience of these newly refurbished homes.”

The refurbishment of the 1000 homes is just the beginning of the MOD’s mission to transform military family housing. More than 40,000 homes will be modernised as part of the generational renewal set out in the recent Defence Housing Strategy, which is backed by £9bn of investment over ten years.
