Patch Hacks: Giving magnolia its marching orders

As part of our commitment to modernise outdated policies and give Service families more freedoms, we’re introducing a new Defence Homes Colour Palette.

We understand that being able to personalise your home is important. Whilst previously all walls had to be returned to magnolia or white before moving out, our new colour palette offers a broader range of colours for families to choose from. Colours within this range are light and neutral and will not require reverting to white.

Take a look at our new palette along with some inspiration on how they could be styled in your home.

Giving families as much freedom as possible to choose what best suits their taste and lifestyle, the new palette doesn’t specify particular paint brands, colours or type (e.g. matt or silk). If you are unsure if your chosen colour complies with the approved range on the colour palette, you can check with your dedicated Housing Officer.

Families living in service family accommodation (SFA) are still welcome to paint their walls other colours outside of the new colour palette range, but these will require reverting back to white upon move out.

With support from our industry partners, along with the new colour palette we’ve created a Top Tips guide for painting the interior of your SFA. It includes helpful guidance on everything from choosing the right type of paint for a room to prepping the walls and aftercare.

We’ve created some paint FAQs but families can also speak to their dedicated Housing Officer if you have any further questions.

Share your Patch Hacks

If you’ve styled your SFA home with a colour from the new Defence Homes Colour Palette, we’d love to hear from you.

As part of Patch Hacks we’re sharing how families are personalising their SFA, whether this be paint or temporary enhancements, on our corporate channels to help inspire other military families.

If you’d like to share what you’ve done to personalise your home, tag or message us on our Instagram or X account or fill out our form and we’ll get in touch.
